Core Concepts
Fanaa (annihilation) is the Sufi concept of ego dissolution. The individual self (nafs) must be extinguished for divine consciousness to emerge.
This process involves:
• Recognizing the ego's illusions
• Surrendering personal will to divine will
• Experiencing unity with all creation
• Living in constant remembrance of God
After fanaa comes baqaa (subsistence), where the mystic returns to worldly life infused with divine consciousness.
Key Insight
"Die before you die, and you will never taste death."
